Once the realm of clunky, graphite boxes, televisions are increasingly credible objects of desire in the design department, largely thanks to the simplification (and shrinking) of the wires and controls. Much as we love our gadgets to be the highest tech possible, we like the technology itself to remain out of sight. The advent of the flat screen was a marginally exciting development, but nothing compared to the intrigue we feel towards Philips’ latest creation.

Switched-off, the Aurea is a standard 42″ wall-mounted flatscreen television. But switch it on and the Philips Ambilight technology replicates the colours on screen, creating an ever-changing halo of light. The effect is altogether futuristic but in a reassuringly ethereal manner, intended to effortlessly bring the viewer closer to the action on screen. A sleek remote control device means you can change the levels of brightness and immersion to suit your viewing material, from relaxed to dynamic. In keeping with the seamless integrated technology, 26 invisible speakers surround the rim of the television.

Bendable Display is Real

Remember the I Robot movie where they used holographic video messages that were stuck in a small plate-like installation? They also used a rolling out video displays in their portable devices. Sony has made a big step towards it. They have developed a display that can be bent. The new bendable display is very thin and it is a 2.5 inch one. I am sure they can now make any sizes thanks to their new technologies. Sony’s thin film transistor and electroluminescent technologies allow scientists to make a bendable display. Do not try to bend your LCD display at home; it cannot bend, even if it’s from Sony.

Saying thin I meant that the display is really thin. It is 0.3 mm thick which is about 0.12 of an inch. Imagine that? I personally think that this display will open a new era of cell phones, GPS navigators and all the portable media players. Why? Simply because the thickest thing on a device is its display. Who invents the thinnest display has the thinnest cell phone that everybody loves. Having all those advantages as opposed to usual LCD displays this baby is really expensive too. Sony is still trying to make this a cheaper product so that usual people like us can buy their gadget. Well, it will be out of my allowance’s price range for a year or two.

Nano Sized Bendable Batteries – Future is Near

The biggest problem of all gadgets is battery life. Cell phone or audio player, it becomes completely dead when its battery is depleted. Sometimes it is very annoying when in the middle of long trip you are left with no gadgets to entertain you. Moreover, dead GPS in a forest or tourist journey can mean a ruined trip. The only solution to this problem is better batteries. However, the laws of nature are cruel – the more battery holds, the bigger and heavier it is. However, an answer comes straight from nanotechnologies.

Scientists at UCLA have made an interesting, yet useful invention. They built and showed to the public the first nanotube batteries, which will be, as we think, a great replace for modern Li-Ion or Li-Pol batteries. They are less than millimeter thin, and have the structure almost like the old rechargeable batteries do, using zinc-carbon makeup – they are composed of thin layers of zinc and manganese oxide over a layer of nanotubes. They are very thin and small, and because of nanotubes they are bendable too.

Unfortunately, the energy produced by this type of batteries is very small at this level. However, with the current rate of technology development, it will be easy to solve that problem – that’s what lead scientist George Gruner says.

In the future, these nano-batteries can be used even for producing a powered T-Shirts or jackets – imagine your clothes, that recharge your gadgets while you are on the go. It is amazing to think that huge and heavy box-like batteries as we know them now will become a thing of the past, making way for a true high-tech thin and bendable ones.

Talk about specialised: the Asahi Beerbot aka the Robocco

Looking like a mix between good ol’ R2D2, a lamp and a golf ball, here comes the Robocco from Asahi.
As you might have guessed from the title, this robot’s only task is related to beer: it should take one out of its belly, open it, and pour it in a mug. And this is what it does.

Initially only available as a prize for a contest, it is now on sale at CScout Japan.

It can hold a sixpack (of standard cans) in its refrigerating belly.
At the press of a button, a can will be lifted, opened and poured into the mug.
The whole operation will be accompanied by incessant nagging and lots of text on its display.

The ‘used, but in perfect condition’ robots are available for $800 (add $100 for insured delivery). The price is steep, for a device that only does one thing (and it doesn’t even do it good), but think of how rare it is.

Future Sonics Atrio M5 gets reviewed by Gear Diary and ABI


Both AnythingButIpod and Gear Diary had a chance to check out Future Sonics latest earphones the Atrio M5.

The Future Sonics Atrio m5s are an impressive set of earphones. I found them to be some of the most comfortable I have ever tried, and the sound produced was distinctly impressive. Let’s face it, $200 is a lot to plunk down on a set of earphones. But if the sound coming out of your player is really important to you, then making this particular sacrifice will be easily justified.

Without a doubt, the Future Sonics Atrios are my favorite in-ear monitors at the moment. No other IEMs I know of do so much right and so little wrong. They’re not the most “pedantic” phones out there, but they’re the most musical ones for my tastes. Almost like good full-sized headphones, they make the sound really enjoyable, and they get my feet tapping – no matter what style of music I’m listening to. They are punchy and precise without being fatiguing, they are quite spacious and still isolate a lot. The Future Sonics Atrio M5 are not the cheapest in-ear monitors around, but they’re far from being the most expensive ones you can find. They’re worth every penny, and they give the double/triple/quadruple balanced armature IEMs a run for their money. Highly recommended for people who love to listen to the music instead of analyzing single sine waves.

Amtek shows off U560 UMPC at Computex

OEM manufacturer Amtek’s rolled into Computex with a fresh new UMPC prototype, and it looks like it may have already signed up a partner in the US to offer it under their brand name. That bit of news comes from GottaBeMobile, which has also managed to scope out a few of the device’s specs.

As is par for the course these days, the device is based on Intel’s McCaslin platform, and packs either an 800MHz A110 or 600MHz A100 processor, a 3600mAh 2-cell battery with an optional 4-cell extended battery, and an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam, not to mention a full QWERTY keypad. Apparently, Amtek is set to put the device into mass production by the end of the year, although it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to hear anything on pricing or availability, as well as any word about that mystery US partner.
