Seven Samurai chipmakers set to take on Intel

You know, it’s been nearly forty years since Intel introduced the first microprocessor, and even at this late date the company comprises a whopping eighty percent of the global market for CPUs.

But not so fast! Like an electronics industry remake of The Magnificent Seven (which is, of course, an American remake of The Seven Samurai) NEC and Renesas have teamed up with a stalwart band of companies, including Hitachi, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Panasonic, and Canon, to develop a new CPU that is compatible with Waseda University professor Hironori Kasahara’s “innovative energy-saving software.”

The goal is to create a commercial processor that runs on solar cells, moderates power use according to the amount of data being processed (a current prototype runs on 30% the power of a standard CPU), remains on even when mains power is cut, and, of course, upsets the apple cart over at Intel. Toshiba Dynabook UX reviewed, deemed a cut above other netbooks

Toshiba’s 10.1-inch netbook — the Dynabook UX — hasn’t been on our radar terribly long, but already it’s beginning to make the review rounds.

Portable Monkey’s just gotten their hands on one and while they are fans of the design, think the over all build quality is a bit better than many netbooks, and also found the battery life to be pretty good (they got about 3.5 hours per charge), there are also a few drawbacks.

The keyboard is cramped, the built-in scrolling is none too responsive, and the volume of the speakers is extremely quiet. Read the rest of this entry »


Toshiba’s Penryn-based Satellite A300 / P300 uncovered

Look out, here comes yet another duo hopping on the Penryn train, and each of these buggers are sporting a Toshiba logo.

Up first is the €999 ($1,480) Satellite A300 — the apparent successor of the A200 — which features a 15.4-inch display, a refreshed design, Harman Kardon speakers, built-in fingerprint reader, 1.3-megapixel camera, integrated microphone, up to 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive and your choice of a Core 2 Duo T5500 (A300-124) or T8100 (A300-11I).
