Switched On: Android’s tablet traversal

At AsiaD this week, Google’s Andy Rubin noted that there were at least six million Android tablets in use. That number included only those running Google services. One could question whether the briskly selling Nook Color — which is not open to Android apps at large — is relevant to that tally, at least from a developer perspective. It will certainly be the case, though, that the Kindle Fire — also expected to be a hot seller — will be an important addition to the number moving forward.

Still, Rubin conceded, it was a tally far behind that of the 30 million cumulative units of the iPad, which broke open the modern-day tablet category, extended its lead with the iPad 2, and will likely see another revision this coming spring. When Apple introduced its tablet device, it set a precedent for third-party developers by rewriting core applications to take advantage of the iPad’s larger display with “HD” versions. And while there are still far fewer native iPad apps than iPhone apps, Apple is far ahead in the race for native tablet software. Read the rest of this entry »

Russian prez is impressed by iPad 2

In non-Soviet Russia… presidents tend to receive some pretty swanky high-tech gifts.

Dimitry Medvedev, leader of the good people of Russia and one of the few men to successfully rock denims with a suit jacket, has been bestowed with a fresh new iPad 2 and his facial expression seems to suggest he was immediately irradiated with blasts of magic, fairy dust, and the smiles of innocent children from across the world.

We just hope he hasn’t seen the crummy camera yet, he is something of a tablet photography connoisseur. Read the rest of this entry »

HTC Flyer vs. Galaxy Tab vs. iPad … fight!

In a world of 10-inch dual-core Androids, HTC has opted to tread its own path by cranking up processor speeds, sticking to a 7-inch form factor and eschewing the latest Honeycomb build for a Gingerbread version it could customize more comprehensively with Sense.

All that’s well and good, but sometimes all it comes down to is how these gadgets look and feel.

We know, from the side that tablet up there looks a lot like Toshiba’s still unnamed 10-inch Honeycomb tablet, but it’s actually the company’s future Windows 7 slate, which we were told today won’t be hitting the market until the second half of 2011.

The model Toshiba had on display was behind glass and wasn’t actually powered on, but we did confirm that it will have an 11.6-inch display and will be powered by Intel’s Atom Oak Trail processor.

That’s all we were able to get out of the company, but apparently that very tablet was on display at CES, and Notebook Italia gathered there that it will have 64GB of storage and 2GB of RAM. Read the rest of this entry »

Seton Hill University hands out iPads to students

If there’s one thing that universities are good at, it’s dreaming up trendy technology initiatives. Apple knows that (as does McGraw-Hill) so it’s no surprise that the company’s been pushing to get the iPad adopted by schools around the country.

And so it begins: Seton Hill University, a school in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, has announced that starting this fall all full-time students will get a slate of their own.

We thought that the Kindle as textbook replacement idea was a little whackadoodle, and we don’t have much hope in the iPad as a textbook replacement either.

But if the school’s aim is to get students playing Super Monkey Ball and up-to-date on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, then we might have a winner here.

Entourage Edge review

Is it an Android tablet? An e-reader? Just a sweet gadget with two screens? Truth is the Entourage Edge is a little bit of everything, and that’s exactly why we’ve been so intrigued with the “dualbook” since we fondled it at CES.

Finally ready to make its shipping debut, the $499 dual screen device is aimed at students, but really it’s for anyone interested in a combination 9.7-inch E Ink reading / note-taking experience and a 10.1-inch Android web tablet. It’s sounded very cool to us for quite a while, but there’s always a difference between hype and reality.

Does the Edge live up to its promise or attempt to do too much? The only place to find out is after the break in our full review. Read the rest of this entry »

Apple has just posted details on its iPad battery replacement service, which is really not a battery replacement service at all. Check out the company’s opening line:

“If your iPad requires service due to the battery’s diminished ability to hold an electrical charge, Apple will replace your iPad for a service fee.”

Now, let’s compare that to the verbiage found in the iPhone’s battery replacement program details:

“If your iPhone requires service only because the battery’s ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, Apple will service your iPhone for a service fee.”

It’s been quite a while since an Algiz tablet last popped up on our radar, but Handheld US is now back with another model: the Algiz 7.

In addition to a fresh new white enclosure, this one packs a 7-inch touchscreen display, along with a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, a 64GB SSD, and Windows 7 Professional for an OS.

To help you out in the field, you’ll get a hot-swappable 2400 mAh dual battery pack, built-in GPS, and optional 3G – not to mention ruggedization to MIL-STD-810G standards.

No word on a price just yet, but this one will apparently start shipping next month.
