If you’ve seen our Hong Kong feature from awhile back, then you would’ve already heard about my favorite gadget hangout Sham Shui Po.
By chance, my post-flight stroll in said district yesterday coincided with Apliu Street’s Chinese New Year flea market, which featured many vintage items like jade figurines, paintings, jewelry, video tapes, vinyl records, etc.
Naturally, what really caught my attention were the old gadgets that were literally piled up along the street, and from just HK$30 (US$3.85), you could easily pick up an old classic such as a Sony Clié, an HP iPaq, a WonderSwan Color, an original GameBoy, a MiniDisc player, or even a proper old school laptop or camera.
Hell, some guy even had a couple of Nintendo Micro VS Systems (Donkey Kong Hockey and Boxing)! Read the rest of this entry »
You know, sometimes if you just study hard, keep your nose clean, and stay away from the pirate cable TV business, fate will do you a solid.
For instance, check this post by PreCentral forum member go4craig. Today, the hapless youngster innocently applied webOS Doctor in a bid to reset his phone back to factory and wouldn’t ya know it? When all was said and done, the phone’s operating system was upgraded to webOS 1.2. And what’s more, the maneuver has been repeated successfully by a handful of other forum members.
What can the accidental early adopter expect for their trouble? How about account information for the App Catalog (a sign of paid apps to come), a Select All option in the browser’s edit menu, and some changes in GPS location services. Seeking to revive its sharply fallen fortunes and produce a successor to its aging Treo device, Palm unveiled a sleek new smartphone, the Pre, on Thursday and an exclusive partnership with Sprint to distribute it.
Palm executives say the touch-screen device and the new operating system inside it, WebOS, break new ground in the fiercely competitive smartphone market. The phone’s selling points include an emphasis on fast Web browsing and efficient multitasking.
Jonathan J. Rubinstein, executive chairman of Palm, resisted comparisons of the Pre with the iPhone from Apple. Read the rest of this entry »

As the launch of the 3G iPhone approaches, BusinessWeek reports that competitors face the same problem they did in July of last year.
“Most people want the iPhone, just as they want the iPod and not some other MP3 player,” says Gloria Barczak, professor of marketing at Northeastern University. “People want the real thing.”
The difference between now and then is that the real thing will cost less, at least up front. Higher costs for data plans and messaging actually means the 3G iPhone costs more over the life of the contract with AT&T. Read the rest of this entry »

After some digging around in the recently posted user guides, some have turned up a possible rainbow of colors for the Centro.
If you follow the guide and click on the AT&T branded white Centro, you will be given a page that shows (pictured above) the rainbow of Centro colors.
We have seen the “AT&T only” model, the white with green keys that seems to either be loved or hated, but included in the picture is also the white with the grey keys that we have seen, and previously thought was going to AT&T. Read the rest of this entry »
