Nokia’s fighting an uphill battle to retain its community of developers as it switches focus to Windows Phone and Microsoft’s Windows Phone Developer Tools from what was a joint Symbian / MeeGo smartphone strategy unified under the Qt development framework.
As such, Espoo just notified its Launchpad members that they’ll be receiving about $1,000 in free hardware in the form of Nokia’s new flagship E7 QWERTY slider and a “Nokia WP7 device” just as soon as it’s available.
Nokia’s also tossing in a few other incentives like free access to the next Nokia World / Nokia Developer Summit, three months free tech support for all Nokia technologies (limited to 10 tickets), a free User Experience evaluation for one app, business development assistance, and help publishing apps on the Ovi store.
This is also great news for us as the chance of seeing leaked pics of that first Nokia WP7 device have just increased dramatically.
We know, from the side that tablet up there looks a lot like Toshiba’s still unnamed 10-inch Honeycomb tablet, but it’s actually the company’s future Windows 7 slate, which we were told today won’t be hitting the market until the second half of 2011.
The model Toshiba had on display was behind glass and wasn’t actually powered on, but we did confirm that it will have an 11.6-inch display and will be powered by Intel’s Atom Oak Trail processor.
That’s all we were able to get out of the company, but apparently that very tablet was on display at CES, and Notebook Italia gathered there that it will have 64GB of storage and 2GB of RAM. Read the rest of this entry »
So far, Chrome is the only browser of the big four — Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer being the other three — to escape the Pwn2Own hacking competition unscathed the past two years. (Sorry Opera aficionados, looks like there’s not enough of you to merit a place in the contest… yet.)
Evidently, its past success has Google confident enough to pony up a cool $20,000 and a CR-48 laptop to anyone able to find a bug in its code and execute a clean sandbox escape on day one of Pwn2Own 2011.
Should that prove too daunting a task, contest organizer TippingPoint will match El Goog’s $10,000 prize (still $20,000 total) for anyone who can exploit Chrome and exit the sandbox through non-Google code on days two and three of the event.
For those interested in competing, Pwn2Own takes place March 9th through 11th in Vancouver at the CanSecWest conference. The gauntlet has been thrown — your move, hackers.
Microsoft just dropped its first press release of MIX 10 on us, and in addition to detailing the Sliverlight and XNA-based Windows Phone 7 Series development situation, we’ve also got a list of launch software partners and some screenshots of apps in action.
There’s some heavy hitters here, and everything from games to enterprise apps are represented — notables include the Associated Press, Citrix, EA Mobile, Foursquare, Namco, Pangeonce, Pandora, Seesmic, Shazam, and Sling.
