Nokia N75 and N76 now available — from Nokia USA

For a company that tends to concentrate on candybars and the occasional slider for its smartphone stable, a double shot of S60 flips in the American market is pretty much a bumper crop — and that’s exactly what Nokia’s delivering, officially announcing its own availability of the N75 and the N76 today.

Notice we say “its own” availability; the N75 has been livin’ it up in AT&T’s lineup for a few weeks now but it’s been nigh impossible to get one contract-free from the carrier, so Nokia’s direct sale is a welcome one for folks that just want to buy one outright. Side by side, the N76 solidly whips its stablemate in the looks department, but bear in mind one critical fact: 3G data lurks underneath the N75′s hood.

Pick up the N75 for $429.99 and the N76 for $499.99 starting today from Nokia (including the flagship stores in New York and Chicago) and its distributors.

LG SV280 Banana Phone Sprouts Two Asian Babes, Turns Green

lg_green_banana.jpg

LG’s SV280 “Banana Phone” is getting closer to the true banana color, now available in green instead of that white color with the orange trim we showed you last month. Aside from its verdant hue, it’s the same slider as its relatively colorless brother, with a 1.3-megapixel camera, an MP3 player and 142MB of onboard memory.

Although this SV280 is a bit fat for our taste, we do like its curved shape, which feels much more natural than many other cellphones that either resemble a pack of gum or a bar of soap. But this odd metallic color is not exactly making us green with envy. Why didn’t LG just make them yellow? A banana that green would take a week to get ripe.

Samsung i620, the i600’s successor?

No, the Samsung SGH-i620 isn’t available yet nor it was announced so far but some carriers hinted its existence already. And now, UK-based website Mobile Gazette posted the first photos and draft specifications of this smart QWERTY slider which is definitely following the SGH-i600 philosophy.
While not too much is known yet, Mobile Gazette says, the i620 will be a triband (only) GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone as well as supporting UMTS (supported bands are unknown), featuring two cameras (one with 2 megapixel and photo light). It’s expected to be powered by Windows Mobile 6 and closed, the phone measures something around 59 mm width and 94 mm height while opened it’s 131 mm:

All other specs like WiFi and Bluetooth support are speculated only (but can be expected). If the design above turns out to be true, it’s interesting to see that Samsung continues with QWERTY phones but in a smart way we haven’t seen before for “BlackBerry-like” devices.

Further information about price and availability aren’t available today.

UPDATE: The Global Certification Forum (GCF) lists two versions of the new phone: the Samsung SGH-i620 and the SGH-i620V (V = Vodafone like the SGH-i600V is the Vodafone version of the i600?) and confirms, that both devices are triband GSM (900/1800/1900 MHz) only but also confirms support for HSDPA (UTRA FDDI) and video telephony. Definitely good news for Europeans but bad news for Americans since it’s not quadband at all.

The SMS M500 GSM Watchfone: the 58 year wait is over

Calling all cars, calling all cars… be on the look out for the SMS M500 GSM Watchfone. That’s right, the first shipments of the M300 followup are said to be leaving Hong Kong as of tomorrow, May 30th.

Now we can all get a little Dick Tracy with “the world’s smallest mobile phone” — or so says SMS Technology Australia. Unlike Dick’s 2-way Wrist Radio which emerged in 1949, this pup goes quad-band GSM while packing a 1.5-inch touchscreen with itty bitty, built-in stylus; Bluetooth 2.0; and all the 120 x 160 pixel MP4 video (or MP3/AAC audio) you can pack into its 128MB of storage.

The watch weights just 60-grams and should hold-up to about 200 minutes of talk or 80 hours standby before needing a USB recharge. Now if someone could just hook us up with a jetpack we can get to living in the future promised to us by Uncle Walt (no, the other one) in those free lovin’ 70s.

RAZR 2 V8 gets hands-on review

MobileBurn got themselves a hands-on with the hot new Motorola RAZR 2 V8 — if you don’t think it’s hot, at least admit that it’s what the original RAZR should have been. The most notable change is obvious, and very welcome: no more hump, chin, or lump used to accommodate the chunky internals.

The semi-touch screen is also an interesting variation on the usual touchscreen style, with tactile buzzing feedback when one of the three touch buttons on the external screen are pressed. The pre-production model had a poor shutter button, which is a bit of a disappointment since this is usually a well used button, and considering the effort put into the external screen. (Let’s hope that this’ll get fixed for production models.)

The reviewers found that the main keypad was great, with a not-too-rubbery feel, and the UI is an improvement in all the areas that count — snappy, clear, and customizable. The refinements make the RAZR2 V8 sound like a winner to us: a pity it had to be such a long time coming.
