Nokia N81 and N82 come to light

Symbian-Guru has the scoop on not one, but two unannounced new high-end Nokia handsets, the N81 (pictured on the left) and the N82 (pictured on the right).

The slider-style N81 looks it’ll be the successor to their N91 musicphone (except less, uh, busted-looking) and sport a full 8GB of memory, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, quad-band EDGE and 2100MHz HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The N82 has a more traditional candybar form-factor and’ll have a five megapixel camera with Xenon flash and auto-focus Carl Zeiss lens, quad-band GSM (doesn’t say whether it’ll be GRPS or EDGE, but we’re guessing EDGE), 2100MHz HSDPA, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi, integrated GPS, FM tuner, and a microSD memory card slot.

Doesn’t sound like either will be out until Q4 of this year.

E-TEN Glofiish X500 and M700 get Windows Mobile 6 updates

Hot on the heels of T-Mobile’s Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for the Dash, E-TEN is rolling out the first Windows Mobile 6 Professional updates for its handsets. As of a few days ago, if you happen to have an X500 kicking around with that oh-so-long-in-the-tooth Windows Mobile 5 on it, head on over to E-TEN’s site to freshen it up.

It seems that M700 owners will have to keep that download finger waiting for another week as the Microsoft certification process seems to be stopping that ship from sailing. The update process is pretty straightforward, register your handset, E-TEN will send you an "action key" which coupled with your IMEI will let you get at the goodies. Good luck on those updates, and if you have a happy or nightmarish story about your upgrade, let us know. Hit the read link to head on over to E-TEN’s site for all the details.

World’s highest cellphone call made with Motorola Z8

He did it, British climber Rod Baber made a cell mobile phone (apparently using a MOTORIZR Z8, not a satellite phone) call from the top of Mount Everest. In fact, he made the record breaking call twice: the first to a voice mail account, the other to his wife and children. He even sent a text message to Moto which read, "One small text for man, one giant leap for mobilekind – thanks Motorola."

Real cute, Rod. The Motorola sponsored "world record" was made possible by a Chinese mobile base station installed with a line of sight to the north ridge. Officially, the calls were made at 29,035 feet (about 8,848 meters) in temperatures of -22 degress fahrenheit (-30 degrees centigrade) — so cold that Rob had to tape the batteries to his body just to keep them active. We’re not sure where he stored the banana-shaped Z8. Of course, anyone who has ever made a call from a commercial aircraft (hey, it happens) knows that it’s really not a record, but who are we to argue with Guinness?

Verizon launches VCAST Song ID

If you’re like us and are forever scribbling sticky notes or text notes on your handset when you hear a song you like — provided you actually get the title from the radio announcer — Verizon now has you covered with VCAST Song ID. This free download (yeah, free!) for supported VCAST handsets lets you identify a song by clicking a button, holding it up to the speaker, and then viola! The software will automagically tell you the name of the song, the artist, and even the album name.

Of course, this is where the cost bit comes in, if you wish, you are then able to download the track to your handset over the air, or, of course, armed with this free info you can zip home and fire up whatever P2P software makes you happy.

Sprint UpStage by Samsung

The Ocean was a great way to kick things off, but we’re just getting started. How about a shiny new Sprint UpStage by Samsung? Speaking from personal experience, the UpStage shocks and delights passers-by with its dual personality, flipping effortlessly from voice to tunes and back with the press of a button. Despite the trick flip action, though, it all clocks in at just a hair over 9mm thick and offers stereo Bluetooth plus a 3.5mm headphone jack to get that tuneage from the microSD slot back into your ears. So hey, leave a comment and try your luck, why don’t ya?

A few rules (yeah, there are always rules):

  • You may only enter this specific contest once. If you enter this contest more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified and barred from all future giveaways. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) In other words, be careful when commenting and don’t submit more than once, ok?
  • You may enter our other EngMob relaunch contests, but you can’t win more than once; if you happen to win more than once (which is pretty unlikely, but still) we’ll ask you to choose just one of your prizes.
  • The prize is open to US entrants only. Hey, it’s a US phone, you couldn’t do anything with it anyway.
  • Contest is open until 11:59pm EDT on Thursday, May 31st.
  • We’ll be shipping all the phones to winners once all the relaunch giveaway contests are over. (Yeah, we know it bites to have to wait, but dems the breaks!)

Red Pearl makes its debut on Rogers

Leave it to Rogers to sneak out another color in the BlackBerry Pearl stable without having an official announcement anywhere in sight. Since May 9, Rogers has been quietly selling the candy apple red 8120 (8100, just kidding) for $249.99 (about $230) on a (gulp!) three year contract.

Now, the only question is why would RIM and Rogers release the Pearl in such a lovely shade without a ton of fanfare? Maybe they were still backlogged from other events.

Samsung E210, Plain Vanilla Cellphone With Fancy Pants On

samsung-e210-mobile-phone-flip-phone.jpg

Take a look at the Samsung E210, a good example of the level of pretty cellphone technology you can get for around $200. If you’re not looking for email capability, Web access, a QWERTY keyboard, and a monthly cellphone bill that’s more expensive than dinner at a New York steakhouse, maybe this 16.5mm-thin flip phone is for you.

Don’t you just love it when Samsung trickles down its super-slim technology from its Ultra Edition line of cellphones, bestowing its slim benefits on the great unwashed? You won’t suffer too much with this bauble, though—it’s got just the right stuff to get the job done. Take the jump to see the spec list.

GSM 900/1800/1900, GPRS class 10 connectivity
120×160 px, 65K color OLED screen
96×96 px, monochrome external display
1.3 mpx camera
176×144/15 fps video capture
10MB of Internal memory
microSD memory card slot
Bluetooth, USB
Dimensions: 92×44×16.5 mm

These phones will first be available in Europe; expect to see that $200 price moving a lot lower if you buy into a cellphone service plan.
