Apple’s App Store hits 10 billion downloads

Now that the number of App Store downloads to iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads around the world has handily exceeded the population of Planet Earth, we can hopefully put this story to bed until they hit another factor of ten — and as unreasonable as 100 billion downloads sounds, we’ll bet it actually won’t take that long.

That’s right: just a few days after kicking off its online counter, Apple’s officially hit the 10 billion mark, which is a whole lot of software any way you slice it.

So, Android Market, you’re next?

How to Turn Your iPod touch into an iPhone: 4G Edition

The latest iPhone and iPod touch are nearly identical devices, ignoring the pesky reality that the latter isn’t a phone. We can fix that. Here’s how to turn your iPod touch into a viable (and cheaper) iPhone alternative out of the box.

Back in the day, turning your iPod touch into an iPhone required a jailbreak, but now, thanks to some wonderful apps and other tools, using your iPod touch as an iPhone alternative is a piece of cake.

The iPhone and iPod touch have always been similar devices, but now that Apple’s added a front-facing and regular camera to the iPod touch, they’re practically identical. You can even make video calls on both devices. The only real missing feature is the phone. Thanks to VoIP (Voice over IP) apps like Skype and Line2 (see more details below), you don’t even need to jailbreak to solve that problem.

Although it’s easier than ever to use your iPod touch as a full-fledged iPhone, there’s still a little work involved. You’ll need the right apps and potentially some extra hardware. Let’s take a look at your options and how you can work around the shortcomings of an iPod touch-turned-iPhone. Read the rest of this entry »

Darts from the iPhone to the iPad

This is probably the coolest bit of iOS connectivity I’ve seen so far. KL Dartboard is an iPad app (for US$3.99) that serves as a virtual board for darts thrown by an app called KL Darts … for the iPhone.

So, the idea is that you buy the iPad app and set it up on the wall, and then you download the free iPhone app and connect the two using Bluetooth. Once the setup is complete, the position that you hold and shake the iPhone in determines where the darts land on the iPad’s board.

What a weird concept. Unfortunately, it’s probably a better idea than it actually is a game; the iPhone app requires OS 4, you’ve got to have both devices, and the reviews on the iPad app say it doesn’t really work that well. It’s impossible for the iPad to know “where” the iPhone is, so you don’t even need to face the screen to throw the darts correctly.

Still, I think we’ll see more cross-device interaction like this; Chopper 2 is a game that is due out soon, and it allows you to use your iPhone as a controller for the iPad version. I think there are plenty of possibilities like that for developers to play around with. Read the rest of this entry »

Jeweler/gadget-monger Stuart Hughes is selling diamond-encrusted iPhone 4 devices for $20,000 — but order quickly, as only 50 of these devices will be made.

These gaudy gadgets come unlocked “for worldwide use” and absolutely sparkling with 6.5 carats of VVS quality, F-color diamonds and a complimentary carrying case made of ostrich foot.

The back of the device features a solid platinum and diamond version of the Apple logo.

This latest foray into luxury goods of indubitable opulence and questionable taste calls to mind a similarly bedecked iPad which surfaced in March. This device features 11.43 carats of hand-set, micro-pave diamonds and retails for a mere $19,999. Read the rest of this entry »
